World Darts Trophy Preview

The 2017 World Trophy is happening this weekend in Barry!
It’s back again! The World Trophy has led a hard life. Ever since the inaugural tournament in a rainy Blackpool in February 2014, the tournament has always seemed to be on the verge of extinction but keeps bouncing back.
In 2015 it was held in late February at Event City Manchester. I was in Blackpool helping out behind the scenes but found a new role in 2015 accompanying our sponsored player Peter Sajwani to the event as he had qualified.
In 2016 it was played at the end of May, the May Bank Holiday in fact, the same as this year. I was again helping behind the scenes and we were at The Lakeside as the tournament found its 3rd home in 3 years!
We have another new venue this year! The Memo Centre in Barry. The home of Gavin and Stacey and now it is the World Trophy that is what's occurring down in Wales. The event is going to be televised but there are still some tickets left. They are £15 a day or £40 for all 4 days. With the high quality field this is great value for money!
I am going to be there working with the BDO Social Media team and I am really looking forward to it.
Glen Durrant is the rightful favourite-The World Champion has also picked up the Welsh Open and Denmark Masters championships in the past month so his form is good. He is looking for the “Grand Slam” of BDO Majors as he is the current Winmau World Master too.
Danny Noppert is 2nd favourite at 7/2. Waites at 16/1 is a bit of an unknown entity at the moment, as he has not been competing much on the circuit recently. If you’re looking for an outsider McGeeney at 25/1 offers a bit of value.
In the Ladies event we have the Ashton duo competing in the Ladies Singles. Mum Lisa and daughter Lindsey compete in the same half of the draw. Lisa Ashton is favourite at 6/5 to win the event, Deta, who is playing well at the moment (mind you when does she not play well?) is at 9/2. Some will put up a case for Lorraine Winstanley at 20/1 as good value. She has been on a terrific run of form and is worth considering.
If you really fancy a rollercoaster ride then if I was a betting man my £1 each way would be on Maria O’Brien. I have seen Maria play at the Devon Open over the past few years and she is capable of destroying anyone on her day. Whether she can go all the way is another matter but at 100/1 it will be fun to see.
It all kicks off at 5pm and there is a fascinating 4 days of darts ahead! It has just been announced that there will be TV coverage, all the details are at the bottom of this bog!
