The Winmau World Masters

The 41st Winmau World Masters starts today. Here is our preview.

I have been lucky enough to be in Hull all this week so far. I have been helping out behind the scenes at the BDO World Trophy qualifiers, The Lakeside qualifiers and of course the Winmau World Masters qualifiers yesterday. It has been quite an experience!

All the qualifiers are held in the Airco Arena, it is a huge indoor sports hall with 5 rows of dartboards. It’s noisy, cold then hot and totally frantic. It’s grassroots darts at its very best. The standard has been amazing.

16 players qualified yesterday to take on the 16 seeds in the last 32 matches on stage at the Hull City Hall today. The matches start at 12.00 and it is all live on EuroSport. I managed to catch a few games yesterday and would like to issue you a wealth warning. Before you pop your last fiver on a huge accumulator on all the seeds, stop for a second and then don’t!

I really don’t think I would be exaggerating to say that any one of these last 16 matches is a dead cert. Mark McGeeney will have his work cut out against number 1 seed James Wilson and at the other end of the day Dennis Harbour’s boat may not come in against Wolfie.

But games like Boulton v Phillips, Larsson v Hofstra, Hogan v Mitchell, Blackwell v de Graaf and Kenny v Waites should give the qualifiers a chance to give the seeds something to think about.

We will post the match odds up as soon as they are available.
