The Darts performance Centre were on one of the proud sponsors of The Petersfield Open and here is the report from a fine day of darts.

2nd Annual Petersfield Open

The annual darts event  was held on Saturday 23rd May on probably one of the hottest days possible for playing darts 70 players from all over the south turned up to compete.

    The Petersfield Open's Venue

PDC star Andy “Rocky” Jenkins topped the bill and he showed his class with a 15 dart opening leg in his first match V Chris Duff from Winchester. “Rocky” didn’t have it all his own way as Chris Duff hit back with a 138 finish that levelled the game at 2:2. Jenkins then showed his class to take the game 3:2 in the decider.

The women players were also off to a good start- Jane Monaghan’s match against Stefan Evrard also went to a deciding leg and Jane was on double top to win the game in 18 darts! Jane went out on double 5 to secure a 2nd round spot against Andy Jenkins. Two Petersfield Academy coaches “Gaffer” Hiscock  and his brother Carl Hiscock were playing on adjacent boards but had mixed fortunes. Carl went through 3:0 against John Palmer in an all Petersfield game with a tidy 48 checkout but “Gaffer” went out 3:1 to Jason Hills

The Academy members were also displaying what the coaches had been teaching them. Zak was the width of the wire away from taking out a 118 finish but had to settle for double 10 to move through against Dan Hammond . Next up for Zak was Isle of Wight player and last year’s runner up Tony “Little Legs” Broughton. Tony seemed to be keen to make up for that defeat by cruising past Zak 3:0 in 18, 14 and 18 darts.

In the last 16 Andy Jenkins came up against Robin Hathaway, In what was a hot corner of the venue Robin triumphed over Andy with a 3-1 win to book a place in the Last 8, with Andy just missing out on the Prize money in the last 16. Tony Broughton cruised passed a promising young player in Charlie Jackson 3-1, to set up a quarter final place against Harting’s Derek Hill.

Alton and Hampshire player Mick Street cruised through his first 2 matches with 3-0 wins in both to set up a Last 16 match against promising Dorset Darter Young Thomas Chant, Mick went down 3-0 with some fantastic finishing from the Dorset darter, who went on to play Portsmouth Jason Crawley in the Last 16. Thomas unfortunately went out at this stage but picked up £25 for being the furthest youth player – sponsored by Chris Duff

Taking place before the main final was the first round plate final. Stefan Evrard was up against Kev Lockett after the pair cruised through their games to reach this stage. Stefan ultimately triumphed with a 4-2 win and picked up the £50 purse for winning.

The final was played between Robin Hathaway and Last year’s runner up Tony Broughton. Tony Started the final well, the first 2 legs went with the throw in 19 and 21 darts, tony then rattled of 3 legs in 24,16 and 19 darts to take a 4-1 lead over Robin, Tony then let Robin in and Robin took the next 3 legs in 17,20 and 18 darts to set up a deciding final leg. Tony must have thought it was a case of De ja vu, as he had been in a similar position against Bob Crawley 12 months previously. Tony started the Leg with 41 and Robin hit back with 100 to put Tony under immediate pressure, Tony Responded hitting 123 and 100 in the next 6 darts, with Tony sitting on 194 and Robin on 144 Robin fired in a 132 to leave himself on 12 to take the game. Robin missed 3 darts to take the game and gave Tony the chance to take out 94 to win the match, Tony missed the 94 and left himself 60, and Robin didn’t make the same mistake at the second time of asking and took out the 12 to win. Robin finished with a 25.31 avg against Tony’s 25.71.

Robin walked away with the £250 1st prize and the title of 2nd Annual Petersfield Open Winner.
