Sunshine Darts

Just because the sun has come out you do not have to put away your darts! One player is gearing up for next season already with his own Darts Performance Centre training plan. You can try out his coaching session or follow his progress here.
Lee wants to become a better darts player! He recently joined the Darts Performance Centre to help achieve this aim. He got in touch about his planned practice regime and we asked if we could feature his progress in a blog.
Lee is going to send us his schedule and scores and we will publish his progress. We will also “chip in” with our own thoughts and comments from time to time too using our darts coaching experience. We do hope this will inspire not just our members but all players to spend some time planning their practice.
The majority of the text will be all Lee`s comments and data as he has sent it to us and our comments will be preceded by DPC:
The first thing Lee has done is plan exactly what he was going to practice. This is an excellent idea, it keeps you on track and focused on the areas you want to concentrate on. Lee’s session is centered on accuracy and scoring.
Warm Up
Free throwing at the board for 5 mins to warm the arm up. Focus in on targets and groups 5 mins
DPC- It is easy to forget or even dismiss the benefits of a warm-up in darts. We have met a large number of players who complain about shoulder injuries and such like. A good warm-up can help prevent injuries. Maybe Lee could add some stretching exercises to his warm up too.
Power Throws
Solo speed throwing and record on the interactive section of the DPC. Note scores in DPC and on my training log
DPC: A straight forward game that focuses solely on power-scoring. Lee collects his 9 dart average over 11 legs (it is 52.09 or 17.36 per dart).
Retaining your averages gives you a target for your next session. Also Lee has set aside time to fill in his data (see his session plan). This is not practice time wasted-having access to your averages and scores is probably the best feedback most grass-roots players can ever get on how well they are playing (except perhaps winning competitive matches).
3 Leg Match V Computer
3 legs v’s myself using computer. Transfer leg results to excel sheet training log and record on DPC.
DPC- Lee extracts every bit of data he can from his game against the computer. He now has more targets he can aim for next time he plays.
100 @
I select three targets each time I play, for example 20,19 and 18. I record how many times I hit the big number (doubles and trebles will be the target when I am further on ). 33 throws at 20, 33 throws at 19 and 33 throws at 18. I find this game helps with my grouping and becoming more consistant on different parts of the board.
DPC Lee raises another good point here-adapting your sessions to your standard. At the moment Lee realsises it is not a valuable use of his practice time to try and hit the treble. He is right to build up his confidence on the big number, hone his grouping and then the trebles will follow in time.
Round the World
RTW singles – record how many darts
RTW doubles – using computer and record on excel training sheet
Singles – 51 darts
Doubles – 21.09 minutes Hit % 16.26%
DPC- Once again Lee has some more targets for next time he plays. From a performance analysis viewpoint Lee may like to try slowing his game down when going for the singles or the doubles in “Round the World ‘and compare the results. He could take a step back before each throw to see if this style suits him or whether to keep at his normal pace is best for him. Also, we would recommend that Lee focuses on the accuracy percentage rather than the time it has taken to get around the board on the doubles. There is no time limit on how long it takes you to prepare yourself for a shot at the double, so don’t release the dart until you are ready!
What an excellent session! It has achieved what Lee set out to practice, it has given him a benchmark of his performance in different areas and targets to try and beat next time.
