We take a look at the darts of Boris Koltsov

‘The Viking’ Boris Koltsov is a man beginning to really push towards making a name for himself in the PDC. Born in Batumi, Georgia but from Moscow, Russia, Koltsov has quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the PDC, and with such a smooth and direct throwing action, there’s little that can go wrong on the oche for him.

After a two year stint in the BDO, Boris turned his attention to the PDC,in 7 months  Koltsov has won £9,750, from the Challenge Tour and the main Pro Tour when an opportuity became available, placing him at 78th in the Pro Tour Order of Merit. This includes one quarter final appearance in Players Championship 17, in which he defeated Michael Barnard, Jermaine Wattimena, Michael Smith and Jelle Klaasen, before losing out in a 6-2 defeat to ‘The Bomb’, Ron Meulenkamp.

Appearances at the PDC World Championship in 2015, 2017 and 2019 have been relatively unsuccessful for the Russian, failing to make it past the first round on all three occasions; his only victory at the Alexandra Palace coming in his debut in 2015 against the Japanese star Haruki Muramatsu, in which Koltsov prevailed 4-2 in the preliminary round. A 3-1 defeat to Kevin Painter denied Koltsov the chance to progress to the second round, where he would have faced the Spaniard, Cristo Reyes. In 2017, Koltsov failed to make it past the preliminary round, with a 2-1 loss to Dragutin Horvath, before in 2019 coming up against the in form Chris Dobey, who won with ease in a 3-0 thrashing.

Boris Koltsov has also been a staple in the PDC’s World Cup of Darts, partnering the eccentric Alexander Oreshkin from 2016 until 2018, falling short at the first round twice, before a quarter final appearance in 2017, defeating Hong Kong and Australia, before being knocked out by the eventual runners-up, Wales. In 2019, Koltsov had a change of partner, partnering Aleksey Kadochnikov, but this failed to change their fortune from the previous year, suffering another first round exit, this time at the hands of the strong Austrian pairing of Mensur Suljovic and Zoran Lerchbacher.

Boris uses his 21g signature darts from Winmau. The darts are plain tungsten, with white, blue and redpainted grooves towards the front of the dart, to symbolise the Russian flag. The darts are slightly thicker towards the front of the barrel, with grip towards the middle and rear of the dart, reminiscent of another style of Winmau darts: Steve Beaton’s.

The darts come equipped with a set of prism force stems, and a set of prism alpha flights.
